Barisan Nasional wins 48 of 56 Johor seats, beating Pakatan Harapan
BN’s result improves on its 2022 performance and analysts expect it to build momentum ahead of the Negeri Sembilan election on Aug. 1.
Barisan Nasional (BN) secured a sweeping win in Malaysia’s Johor state election, winning 48 of 56 seats, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) took only eight, the Malaysian Election Commission said, according to SCMP Economy.
The BN outcome was better than the 40 seats it won in the 2022 race, even with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim campaigning heavily for PH, analysts said.
SCMP Economy reports the result is expected to give BN momentum heading into the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug. 1 and could deepen friction within Malaysia’s unity coalition, where PH and BN govern together at the federal level but are increasingly competing at the state level.
BN president and deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would not be “arrogant in victory” and pledged to fulfill its campaign promises, adding that it hopes the win will trigger a “blue wave” in upcoming elections.
