Iran says it closed the Strait of Hormuz after a ship was struck

The US said it launched new strikes after IRGC forces attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the strait, leaving a missing crew member and damage onboard.

Iran said it closed the Strait of Hormuz after a vessel it described as taking an unauthorized route was struck, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warning that any retaliation would be met with a severe response.

Iran’s IRGC said the strike stopped the ship, and it accused multiple vessels of attempting to pass on the unauthorized route and ignoring warnings to change course. The strait was closed “until further notice,” with the IRGC linking the closure to the end of what it called US interference in the region.

The US military said it launched a new round of strikes against Iran after IRGC forces attacked a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the strait. US Central Command said a civilian crew member was missing and the vessel could not continue due to an onboard fire and significant engine-room damage.

Iran’s naval statement added that acts of aggression would be met with a severe response and that new bases in the region would be targeted.
