Memory and SSD prices surge in Shenzhen as supply tightens
Traders in Huaqiangbei say memory prices have tripled in a year and, in some cases, risen fivefold, raising costs for PC builds.
A memory and SSD supply squeeze in China’s electronics hub, Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei, is pushing up the cost of assembling computers for both gamers and corporate buyers, according to SCMP Economy.
For traders at Huaqiangbei, memory products and solid-state drives have become the biggest cost drivers in personal computer builds. The higher prices are prompting some buyers to delay purchases, with only customers facing urgent needs still willing to pay the premium, SCMP Economy reported.
Inside SEG Plaza, a vendor surnamed Ye said memory prices have risen fivefold in the past 12 months. Other traders said prices are expected to keep climbing over the coming months, arguing that those who stockpiled last year profited as the market tightened, SCMP Economy added.
