Hong Kong registered electors fall to 4.12 million for fifth year
The share of newly registered voters rose 78.0% year over year to 64,900, the highest since 2021, even as the electorate for geographical constituencies declined.
Hong Kong’s number of registered electors in geographical constituencies fell for a fifth straight year, dropping to 4.12 million in the 2026 provisional register, according to figures released by the Registration and Electoral Office, reported by SCMP Economy.
The outlet said the total marked a year-on-year decline of 24,400 electors, or 0.59%, and was down 347,300, or 7.8%, versus the 2021 peak of 4.47 million electors.
SCMP Economy linked the broader shift to Beijing’s overhaul of Hong Kong’s electoral system under the “patriots ruling Hong Kong” principle, which removed opposition through stringent vetting and reduced direct seats.
Despite the overall drop, the number of new voter registration applications climbed 78.0% year over year to 64,900, SCMP Economy said, with new registrations rising from 400 in 2021 to 35,800 in 2022 before fluctuating in later years.
