China to expand quantum sensing and computing across power grid
The plan follows an 18-month Hefei, Anhui trial where quantum tools were used to detect and diagnose power equipment defects and faults.
China is looking to expand the use of quantum technologies across its power grid to help prevent blackouts, after a successful trial at a substation, according to a report published by China’s People’s Daily.
During an 18-month trial in Hefei in Anhui province, quantum technology was used to rapidly detect and diagnose equipment defects and faults in the power system, the outlet said.
The effort is built around precision sensors and computer simulations, which the report links to potential gains in precision, speed, and security. It cited a researcher at Anhui Electric Power Company, saying the operation demonstrated quantum technology can provide practical support for guaranteeing power supply rather than serving as a showcase.
People’s Daily said the first-of-its-kind facility was officially commissioned in November 2024 and has developed dozens of quantum solutions across measurement, communication, and computing, describing it as a landmark integration of a new-type grid with quantum technology.
