South Korea issues first-ever emergency heatwave alert under new system
The Korea Meteorological Administration triggered the warning in Gyeongsan and Pohang after temperatures met emergency thresholds of 38°C perceived or 39°C actual for one day.
South Korea issued its first-ever emergency heatwave alert on Sunday, using a new warning system introduced this year to respond to longer and more intense heatwaves, officials said, according to Agence France-Presse.
Under the system, an emergency alert is issued when forecast conditions reach perceived temperatures of 38°C or actual temperatures of 39°C for one day.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued the Emergency Heatwave Warning at 10am for two cities in southern North Gyeongsang Province, Gyeongsan and Pohang, agency chief Lee Mi-seon said at a press briefing.
Lee said this was the first emergency alert since the system took effect, with affected areas reaching the emergency criteria over the weekend.
