Typhoon Bavi disrupts travel in eastern China as millions evacuate
Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports planned to cancel more than 650 flights, around 30.0% of capacity, as the storm weakened later on Sunday.
Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China late Saturday, triggering widespread travel disruptions and the evacuation of more than 2.4 million people from areas in the storm’s path, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that as of 8pm Saturday, Chinese airlines were expected to cancel more than 2,800 flights, with Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports set to cancel over 650 flights, about 30.0% of their capacity. Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport also cancelled 296 flights for Sunday but expected to resume flights after noon as the typhoon’s influence weakened.
The storm also disrupted rail operations, with two of four main stations in Shanghai cancelling all trains for the day, and additional services suspended, SCMP Economy said.
Typhoon Bavi first came ashore in Taizhou in Zhejiang at 11:12pm, then made a second landfall in Wenzhou around midnight, after spanning about 1,000km at its widest point, the outlet reported.
