OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 pricing, lowering developer costs up to 80%
The price cuts set GPT-5.6 Luna API costs at $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, and reduce GPT-5.6 Terra prices by 20%.
OpenAI has launched steep price cuts for its latest GPT-5.6 model line-up as competition intensifies from lower-cost Chinese AI rivals, with the company positioning the move as a response to shifting developer demand. According to a post by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X, OpenAI cut developer pricing for its lightweight GPT-5.6 Luna by 80%, bringing API costs to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens. The company also reduced rates for its mid-tier GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20% to $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens.
OpenAI said it is also introducing a “fast mode” for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol that it expects to increase performance speed by up to 2.5 times. The move immediately improved GPT-5.6 Luna’s position in intelligence-per-dollar rankings from research firm Artificial Analysis.
Artificial Analysis ranked GPT-5.6 Luna in its “most attractive” tier, placing it above Chinese competitors including Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 and MiniMax’s M3. The cuts underscore what SCMP Economy describes as mounting pressure on Western AI firms as open-weight, more accessible Chinese options gain traction with international developers through aggressive pricing and faster capability improvements.
