EU foreign chief Kaja Kallas expected to meet Wang Yi in Beijing
The visit would be her first trip to Beijing since taking the role in 2024 and would focus on the EU China strategic dialogue, with topics including Russia ties and tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
European Union foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas is expected to travel to China in the autumn for her first face to face meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi since their tense encounter in Brussels last summer, according to multiple people familiar with the planning, reported by the SCMP Economy.
The trip would also mark Kallas’ first visit to Beijing since she took office in 2024. A date is still being confirmed, and the engagement is expected to revolve around the bilateral strategic dialogue, a mostly annual format for discussing foreign and security policy issues.
High on the agenda are China’s relations with Russia, ongoing crises in the Middle East, and the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait. SCMP Economy said insiders described the Brussels encounter as tense from the outset, citing protocol mix ups and a combative on camera opening in which Kallas pressed Wang over China’s support for Russia.
