US launches strikes on Iran after container ship incident

Iran said it closed the Strait of Hormuz after a warning shot hit a vessel on an unapproved route, escalating shipping risk in the key chokepoint.

The US military launched strikes on Iran after an incident involving a container ship, Reuters reported, as Tehran said it again closed the Strait of Hormuz and some Gulf states came under attack.

Iran said it shut the strait after firing a warning shot that struck a vessel traveling on an unapproved route, and warned that any retaliation would be met with a severe response.

US Central Command identified the ship as the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container vessel, saying it suffered significant damage in the engine room and that one civilian crew member was missing.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre said the crew abandoned the damaged container ship east of Oman and took to lifeboats.
