Europe saw more than 10,000 excess deaths during late-June heatwave

EuroMOMO data showed over 9,000 of the excess deaths were among people aged 65 and older, highlighting heightened health risks for seniors during extreme heat.

European countries reported more than 10,000 excess deaths during a record breaking heatwave that struck the west of the continent in late June, according to official data compiled by EuroMOMO and reported by SCMP Economy.

The vast majority, more than 9,000 deaths, were among people aged 65 and above, according to the network backed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization.

Extreme heat can kill through causes such as heatstroke and by worsening cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, with older people identified as among the most vulnerable groups.

EuroMOMO host Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut said the level of excess mortality at that time of year was unusual and said the high figures are difficult to explain except by extreme heat, while scientists have linked the heatwave’s severity to human caused climate change.
