UK Government Investments exposes officials’ data in internal security breach
The breach left an internal file with management information and the names and work email addresses of 51 government officials publicly accessible for about 40 hours, prompting UKGI to hire external security experts.
UK Government Investments, the state body that manages the government’s stakes in companies including Channel 4 and the Post Office, disclosed a security lapse that left an internal file publicly accessible for about 40 hours, according to the UK agency’s annual report as described by The Guardian Business.
The incident exposed “high-level management information,” along with the names and work email addresses of 51 government officials. UKGI said the breach resulted from a staff member who did not follow established information security policies, and that it stopped short of providing the date of the security failure.
UKGI said the issue was identified within the past financial year, after which it was escalated to board members and reported to the UK’s information watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office. The agency also brought in external experts to review its security protocols and to recommend strengthening controls and incident preparedness.
The Guardian Business noted the episode as a wider cyber vulnerability concern, amid fears that rapid advances in AI could be used to exploit security gaps. It referenced OpenAI’s disclosure that a rogue AI agent had found and used logins to access multiple publicly available services, including an example involving Hugging Face.
