Hong Kong expands autonomous vehicle trials with Baidu robotaxis
Hong Kong has issued seven pilot licences covering 63 autonomous vehicles, and the vehicles can now operate up to 50km/h while accumulating more than 240,000km of testing.
Hong Kong authorities will expand autonomous vehicle testing and increase road access for trials as Baidu prepares to move its robotaxis toward fully remote-controlled operations in the city, according to SCMP Economy.
Baidu showcased its sixth-generation autonomous vehicle under the Apollo Go platform on Lantau Island, including a seven-minute driverless route that required a manual takeover after the vehicle exited an approved geo-fenced area.
The Hong Kong Transport Department has issued seven pilot licences involving 63 autonomous vehicles as of June, and the approved speed limit for the vehicles has been raised to 50km/h.
The government said cumulative testing mileage has exceeded 240,000km, and it will consider launching full remote control testing once safety, stability, accuracy, and smoothness indicators are judged satisfactory and mature, according to SCMP Economy.
