Shenzhen’s new Natural History Museum pulls Hong Kong visitors

The museum opened Tuesday with 35,200 square metres of exhibition space focused on 4.6 billion years of Earth’s evolution, and one visitor group budgeted about 500 yuan per person.

Shenzhen’s newest cultural attractions are drawing some Hong Kong residents across the border for weekend outings, extending Hong Kong’s northbound spending beyond dining, according to the South China Morning Post.

The outlet highlights the Shenzhen Natural History Museum, which opened on Tuesday and features 35,200 square metres of exhibition space covering 4.6 billion years of Earth’s evolution, including dinosaur fossils, rare meteorites, and French Impressionist masterpieces.

For Hongkonger Raymond Leung, a manufacturing technical management worker, the museum’s opening and its meteorite exhibits were enough to plan a weekend trip with three friends.

The group said they are not frequent visitors to Shenzhen and budgeted roughly 500 yuan, or about US$74, per person for the day out.
