Indonesia corruption probe widens after deputy attorney general accused

Police recovered 74kg of gold and more than US$15 million in cash from a residence linked to Febrie Adriansyah, authorities estimate the haul at about 476 billion rupiah.

Indonesian police said they recovered 74kg of gold, plus more than US$15 million in multiple currencies, from a residence linked to Febrie Adriansyah, the country’s former deputy attorney general for special crimes, who is now suspected of corruption, according to SCMP Economy. Authorities estimate the bullion and cash found at the Sentul home in Bogor, southeast of Jakarta, is worth about 476 billion rupiah, a figure that has fueled renewed scrutiny of corruption controls inside Indonesia’s law-enforcement establishment, the outlet said. The scandal arrives as the rupiah has fallen 10.0% over the past year, making it Asia’s worst-performing currency, with investors watching for signs that institutional integrity and policymaking may be weakening. SCMP Economy also noted the case creates an unusual institutional issue, because police said investigations will be transferred in stages to the Attorney General’s Office, meaning the institution Febrie led until days ago will now handle proceedings against a senior official it previously oversaw.
