China raises Gansu flash-flood death toll to 25 amid ongoing alerts
Xinhua reported Heilongjiang has seen river flooding with water levels up to 1.3 meters above warning thresholds, prompting level 4 flood control response in the northeast.
China has increased the reported death toll from flash flooding in the northwestern province of Gansu, with Xinhua saying the figure in Weiyuan county rose to 25 from 10, and that the flooding also injured a further 23 people.
The National Commission for Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief asked Gansu authorities to investigate the incident and improve emergency response measures, as heavy rainfall continued to affect multiple areas.
Separately, China’s Ministry of Water Resources activated a level 4 emergency flood control response, the lowest tier in a four-level system, for the northeastern province of Heilongjiang on Saturday.
Xinhua said 19 rivers in Heilongjiang have flooded, with some water levels exceeding warning thresholds by up to 1.3 meters, while level 4 flood alerts remained in place across other regions including Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Henan, and Hubei.
