Kernel halts grain terminal at Chornomorsk after Black Sea attack

The damage has blocked shipments and caused quality deterioration of about 45,000 tonnes of wheat and 9,000 tonnes of sunflower oil, with a restart timeline tied to emergency response and an engineering assessment.

Kernel Holding SA said it has suspended operations at its export terminal in Chornomorsk after extensive damage from “massive” Russian drone and missile attacks overnight July 10 and 11.

The company said the strikes damaged grain loading and unloading equipment, terminal infrastructure, and power supply lines at the Black Sea facility. It also reported that grain silos and sunflower oil storage tanks were destroyed or severely damaged, leading to blockage, spillage, and quality deterioration.

Kernel estimated that the attacks affected approximately 45,000 tonnes of wheat and 9,000 tonnes of sunflower oil. It said it is conducting a comprehensive technical assessment of the damage, including the volume of lost commodities and recovery costs.

The company said the timeline to resume terminal operations depends on completion of emergency response and the results of an engineering assessment. It also pointed to a broader pattern since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Russia has targeted ports and grain infrastructure, and warned that vessels including those flying flags of China and other countries were put at risk while in port for cargo loading.
