Taiwan to outsource routine guard duties at military academies

The two-stage pilot starts Sept. 1, with private guards taking over routine access control at five sites before expanding to nine total next year.

Taiwan plans to outsource routine guard duties at military academies to private security firms in a pilot programme intended to ease the armed forces’ manpower burden, the island’s defense ministry said Monday, according to SCMP Economy.

Under the two-stage programme, private guards will handle general access control tasks at nine military academy sites, including identity and vehicle checks, visitor registration, and other routine access duties.

The first phase is set to begin on September 1 at five sites, including the National Defence University’s three campuses, the army’s military academy, and the naval academy.

Four additional sites, including the Army Academy, two Air Force Institute of Technology campuses, and the Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School, will join from January 1 next year, as the ministry said the move should allow troops to return to their units to focus on combat training and core missions.
