UK bans support for Iran's IRGC-linked group after antisemitic attacks
The UK said the IRGC almost certainly directed another group that claimed seven attacks at sites tied to Jewish and Israeli communities in Britain.
Britain banned support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a linked group, following a series of antisemitic attacks in the country, Reuters reports.
The UK used new powers meant to curb the use of state-sponsored proxies, citing growing government and intelligence concerns that foreign powers can pay organised crime groups or low-level criminals to carry out activities such as surveillance and sabotage.
Britain said it identified IRGC-linked activity involving threats to life and intimidation on British soil, and that the group used proxy actors to pursue Iranian state objectives overseas.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the new powers are designed to make it easier to prosecute and imprison people carrying out the IRGC’s work in Britain, and the government said the IRGC almost certainly directed the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right, which claimed seven attacks at locations in Britain linked to Jewish and Israeli communities.
