Ukraine and European nations form coalition for defensive missile defense

The coalition will aim to create shared anti-ballistic missile capacity for Europe using member countries’ defense industrial base, research, and operational experience.

Ukraine and nine European countries announced a coalition to develop what they describe as purely defensive anti-ballistic missile capabilities in Europe, citing a growing threat from ballistic missiles. The joint declaration was signed by Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

The group said it is seeking a global solution for an integrated missile defense architecture to deter and defeat future missile threats. It also stated the effort will bring together the countries’ defense industrial base, research, and operational experience to build a shared anti-ballistic missile capacity for Europe.

The declaration said the push is not directed against any people, and it pointed to Ukraine’s experience as a reason for the emphasis on air defenses after repeated Russian ballistic missile strikes in recent weeks.

The announcement came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met allies in Paris to reaffirm support for Ukraine and step up pressure on Russia to end the war, now in its fifth year. SCMP Economy said at least 25 heads of state were expected to attend the Paris meeting, with some staying for France’s July 14 national public holiday military parade highlighting support for Ukraine.
