World Cup and sunshine lift UK consumer spending on beer and online shopping
Barclays data show June spending rose 1.9% year on year, while pubs saw especially sharp boosts on England match days.
World Cup action and unusually sunny weather helped spur UK consumers to spend more in June, with Barclays citing higher card spending on beer purchases and online shopping as people put economic worries aside for summer football. According to Barclays data based on debit and credit card transactions, overall spending increased 1.9% year on year in June, up from 0.8% in May. While this remains below the 3% pace of consumer inflation, the bank said spending momentum improved as England fans prepared for key matches.
Pubs were among the biggest beneficiaries, helped in part by football supporters taking advantage of extended opening hours. Barclays said England’s group stage win over Panama drove the busiest day of 2026 so far for pubs, with takings five times higher than the daily average for the year.
Barclays also pointed to other match-driven surges, including a year-on-year increase of 244% in pub card spending on England’s draw with Ghana, and a 201.5% rise around the round of 16 victory over Mexico when measured over Sunday and Monday. The bank noted card-payment data from Dojo showed a 23% increase in takings compared with the prior Saturday for England’s round of 16 game versus Norway, and said the biggest full day pub sales boost appeared in Southampton, where they nearly doubled versus the prior week.
