Zhejiang University registers emblem eagle as trademark amid Armani talk

The university says it registered the eagle pattern last year after small companies began printing the design on products.

Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, eastern China, has registered the eagle-shaped pattern on its emblem as a trademark, triggering intense discussion on social media over whether the move was meant to head off a potential dispute with Italian luxury brand Armani, according to SCMP Economy.

The report said the eagle in the school’s badge resembles Armani’s logo, and the topic drew more than 400 million views on Weibo.

SCMP Economy noted the debate gained momentum in part due to a recent case involving China’s milk tea brand Molly Tea, which was reportedly ordered to pay 10.3 million yuan, or about US$1.5 million, to Louis Vuitton for infringing seven of LV’s registered four-petal flower trademarks.

Zhejiang University’s consultant Zhang Yifeng, a trademark affairs representative from Hangzhou Henghui Trademark Affairs Firm, said the university registered the eagle pattern at the end of last year because many smaller companies had been printing the design on their products.
