China could target the Philippine Sea to shape carrier operations

Experts cited by SCMP Economy say carrier groups there would help China intercept ships and deter outside forces before they sail toward Taiwan.

For decades, the Philippine Sea was viewed as the route through which US and allied forces could move to defend Taiwan in a war with China, but SCMP Economy reports that rising PLA activity in the western Pacific could change how both sides use the waters.

According to SCMP Economy, experts argue that land-based missile networks in northeast Asia would make operations near shore too risky, elevating the Philippine Sea as a key location for carrier operations.

SCMP Economy also quotes Michael Bosack, director of the non-profit Parley Policy Initiative, who says stationing carrier groups in the Philippine Sea can maximize their capabilities in the broader maritime battlespace and help establish a regional buffer that frustrates foreign maritime forces before they enter the conflict.

Bosack, as reported by SCMP Economy, adds that positioning carrier groups in the Philippine Sea could allow China to intercept enemy ships and deter potential actors from starting the long voyage to Taiwan.
