China pledges deeper ties with Solomon Islands after missile test
Beijing linked the renewed partnership push to expanded practical cooperation in green energy, climate change, health, and education.
A week after a Chinese missile test triggered protests across the Pacific, China said it would deepen ties with the Solomon Islands and reaffirmed its unconditional support for Honiara, according to a statement on a meeting in Beijing.
SCMP Economy reports that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Solomon Islands counterpart Rick Houenipwela on Tuesday, saying bilateral relations had seen strong development since diplomatic ties began in 2019 and that the partnership has delivered tangible benefits to Solomon Islands people.
Wang pledged to expand exchanges and practical cooperation across areas including green energy, climate change, health, and education, with the aim of elevating the countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership.
He also said China maintains continuity and stability in its policy toward the Solomon Islands, adding that it supports Honiara in safeguarding sovereignty, independence, and legitimate rights as the country pursues its own development path.
