Chipotle to open its first Mexico restaurant in Nuevo León
The new location near the Texas border is set as a proof of concept for an expansion that includes plans to reach Mexico City in 2027 with Alsea.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is set to open its first restaurant in Mexico this week, aiming to test its appeal in the country that inspired elements of its menu, BBC Business reports. The company said the move marks a significant milestone for the brand known for customisable burritos, tacos, and bowls.
Chipotle has more than 4,100 outlets worldwide and plans additional growth in Mexico. The first site will be in the northeastern state of Nuevo León near the Texas border, and the chain plans to open more restaurants in the state before expanding into Mexico City in 2027 as part of its collaboration with Mexican restaurant operator Alsea.
The announcement drew mixed reactions on social media, including comparisons to other U.S. fast food brands that have struggled in their menu origins. BBC Business notes that Taco Bell no longer operates in Mexico and that Domino's Pizza exited Italy, while Chipotle executives described the Nuevo León opening as an important proof of concept.
Chipotle also outlined broader global plans, including opening up to 370 new restaurants worldwide this year, with new outlets planned in Singapore and South Korea. According to BBC Business, other chains have previously attempted to expand into countries tied to their menu inspiration, sometimes after repeated setbacks.
