Germany heatwave deaths jump 32% in late June, data shows

About 23,900 people died between June 22 and June 28, including 7,100 more than the two prior weeks, according to Germany’s statistics agency.

Germany’s deaths rose sharply during a record June heatwave, with official data showing mortality increased 32% compared with levels in the previous four years.

The statistics agency said about 23,900 people died between June 22 and June 28, an increase of 7,100 versus the two preceding weeks. The report also revised upward an earlier estimate of roughly 6,800 heat related deaths for the period.

Parts of western Europe, including Germany, experienced extreme temperatures last month, with readings above 41 degrees Celsius. The agency noted the health impact from heat and the rise in death rates are a well known seasonal effect.

It added that, outside the final week of June, Germany’s 2026 mortality figures have generally stayed within the range of the previous four years, with some declines.
