Hong Kong indie bookstore Have a Nice Stay to close on Aug. 30
The shop, founded in 2022, blamed financial losses and cited concerns about unspecified “red lines” tied to prior security remarks about potentially restricted titles.
An independent Hong Kong bookshop, Have a Nice Stay, said it will close on August 30, pointing to financial losses and what it called “hard-to-grasp red lines,” according to SCMP Economy.
In a statement posted on social media, the bookstore attributed its decision to strain on the business, concerns about staff development, and the mental and physical well-being of its team and their families.
The shop also said it cannot effectively review all books to determine which titles could be considered “problematic,” referencing previous remarks by Hong Kong Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung, who did not specify which books might be prohibited.
Have a Nice Stay was founded in 2022 by five journalists who had lost their jobs and operates from a fourth-floor tenement unit in Prince Edward, where it sells books and hosts workshops and sessions with authors, SCMP Economy said. The statement further cited anonymous complaints and letter writers who it said had targeted the shop.
