China aims for 100% renewable power at Antarctic research stations by 2035
Qinling, a station that opened in 2024, already supplies more than 60.0% of its energy needs using solar, wind, hydrogen, and battery storage.
Scientists at China’s Antarctic research bases face extreme winter conditions, including temperatures below minus 80.0 degrees Celsius and sustained wind speeds over 100 km/h.
China’s polar clean energy program says it is targeting renewable power to meet 100.0% of energy demand at all its Antarctic research stations by 2035, according to state-run China Natural Resources News.
The Qinling station, which opened in 2024, already meets more than 60.0% of its energy needs through solar, wind, and hydrogen power, supported by energy storage batteries.
Sun Hongbin, chief scientist on the polar clean energy program, said the long term goal is to fully shift these remote operations to renewables by 2035.
