Singapore warns radicalisation speed has doubled after youth arrests

Singapore’s Internal Security Department said three detained youths, aged 14, 15 and 19, were radicalised between April and June by groups including Islamic State, Hamas and far-right extremist ideologies.

Recent arrests in Singapore of young people linked to extremist ideologies and planned attacks, including school stabbings, have triggered renewed debate about school security after authorities said the speed of radicalisation has doubled, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that over three months this year, three teenagers were detained. The Internal Security Department said the youths, aged 14, 15 and 19, were detained between April and June and were radicalised by groups including Islamic State, Hamas and far-right extremist ideologies.

The 19-year-old, Tan Jun Jie, was reported to have planned knife attacks against Singapore Armed Forces personnel at Sembawang Air Base and LGBTQ students at his school. The 14-year-old was arrested about a month before a planned stabbing during the June school holidays, SCMP Economy said.

Education Minister Desmond Lee said schools already operate with multiple layers of vigilance, training and contingency planning, including security staff, closed-circuit cameras and selective bag checks when necessary, as reported by SCMP Economy.
