Iranian missiles hit two UAE tankers in Strait of Hormuz
The attack killed one Indian crew member and wounded eight, stoking concerns for shipping and supply in a key oil chokepoint.
UAE authorities said two UAE national tankers, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were targeted by two Iranian cruise missiles in the southern lane of the Strait of Hormuz, in Omani territorial waters. Reuters cited the UAE Ministry of Defence as saying the country condemned the attack as a blatant escalation.
The UAE said one Indian crew member was killed and eight others were wounded. The ministry added that the UAE retained its full right to respond and said it remained prepared to address threats, including by taking measures to respond firmly to attempts to undermine security and stability.
In energy markets, the incident coincided with a sharp move in crude, with West Texas Intermediate rising 10.4% on the day to $78.85, according to the same report’s market snapshot.
The story also noted that crude prices often react to disruptions in supply and to geopolitical risks that can affect shipping and production, and that oil benchmarks like WTI are watched closely in relation to broader demand, inventory data, and the US dollar.
