UAE condemns Iran tanker attack as Trump expands Hormuz blockade

Trump said the US would impose a 20% charge on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz starting Tuesday, as US strikes entered a third consecutive night.

The UAE accused Iran of carrying out a “brazen” attack on two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, leaving one person dead and eight others wounded. The UAE Ministry of Defence said the missiles targeted vessels with an Indian crew, with six injured Indian crew members and two Ukrainian wounded, four of them described as serious.

The developments come as Donald Trump said the United States would reinstate a naval blockade of Iranian ports and levy a 20% charge on cargo shipped through the waterway. Trump said the action was meant to prevent “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route while keeping access “fair and open” for other countries.

Trump said US forces were hitting Iran “very hard” and controlling the Strait, and he framed the US role as providing safety and security for the route. He added that the blockade would be in effect from 16:00 Eastern Time on Tuesday, with reimbursement at the 20% rate for costs tied to operating as “the Guardian of the Hormuz Strait.”

BBC Business reported that US strikes continued into a third consecutive night, after earlier exchanges between the two countries in the region. Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran would remain the Strait’s “GUARDIAN,” using Trump’s wording as tensions persist over control of the Hormuz waterway.
