Singapore ministers to donate Bloomberg defamation damages to charity
The High Court awarded S$230,000 in damages to each minister after finding Bloomberg and Low De Wei maliciously defamed them over a July 2024 article about property transactions.
Singapore’s Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng said they will donate the damages awarded to them in their defamation case against Bloomberg to charity, after a High Court judgment delivered on Tuesday.
CNA reports the High Court ordered Bloomberg and Low De Wei to pay S$230,000 (US$178,000) in damages to each minister, concluding the parties had maliciously defamed them in a July 2024 article about the ministers’ property transactions.
Both ministers said the lawsuit was intended to protect their integrity and reputations, as well as the standing of their ministerial offices.
Tan said he welcomed the ruling, characterizing it as confirmation that the allegations in the article were defamatory and as vindication of his position.
