Zelensky dismisses Ukraine’s US ambassador in cabinet shake-up

The ambassador, Olha Stefanishyna, had been in the role for nearly a year, and her exit follows recent changes that included the replacement of Ukraine’s prime minister and defence minister.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, in a presidential decree published on Monday, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy.

Stefanishyna had served in the post for nearly a year and her departure had been expected for several weeks, Reuters reported. The move comes alongside a wider shake-up of top officials, including the replacement of Ukraine’s prime minister and defence minister, and a broader diplomatic reshuffle that is expected.

In a statement on Facebook, Stefanishyna said her departure was her own decision, driven by personal circumstances, and said she had accomplished much during her tenure. Reuters also reported that Stefanishyna wrote that Ukraine increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support when Washington’s political climate was shifting against Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Suspilne public broadcaster previously quoted Stefanishyna as telling reporters in Washington that Zelensky had not sought her resignation, Reuters reported.
