UMC starts mass production of silicon photonics wafers in Singapore
UMC is beginning mass production of silicon photonics wafers at its Singapore facility, with Citi pointing to an improving outlook for the segment.
Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corporation, known as UMC, has started mass production of silicon photonics wafers at its Singapore facility, according to CNBC World.
The company’s launch marks the initial ramp to series manufacturing for silicon photonics, a technology used to support optical data transmission.
CNBC World also cited a forecast from Citi that suggests conditions for the silicon photonics outlook are improving.
The update ties UMC’s Singapore production move to a broader shift toward scaling advanced chip and communications-related manufacturing outside Taiwan.
