Wang Huning to lead China delegation on goodwill visit to North Korea

The visit runs from Wednesday to Friday, and Xi urged China and North Korea to expand cooperation and jointly defend sovereignty and security interests.

China’s fourth-ranked official, Wang Huning, is set to lead a Communist Party and government delegation on an “official goodwill visit” to North Korea from Wednesday to Friday, according to Xinhua, as cited by SCMP Economy.

Wang, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, will also serve as chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s top political advisory body.

SCMP Economy reports that Xi Jinping called for Beijing and Pyongyang to expand cooperation while maintaining “firm strategic resolve” and to resolutely defend their respective sovereignty, security and development interests, according to a Chinese readout.

The announcement follows a series of high level exchanges between Beijing and Pyongyang, reinforcing the pace of bilateral engagement covered in the latest reporting.
