EU position paper accuses China and Russia of seeking regional dominance
The EU document, adopted by the bloc’s 27 foreign ministers, links China to enabling Russia’s war on Ukraine and cites a future EU security strategy expected later this year.
The European Union has adopted a position paper accusing China and Russia of trying to reshape the global order in line with their interests and to push a return to what it calls sphere-of-influence thinking, SCMP Economy reports.
The paper describes Russia and China as the two principal revisionist powers challenging European security and the international rules-based order, and it was written by the EU’s External Action Service as guidance for the EU’s first security strategy.
In its strongest criticism of Beijing, the document says China is a key enabler of Russia’s war on Ukraine, language previously associated with NATO.
EU foreign ministers adopted the text on Monday without an announcement, and the bloc’s security strategy is expected later this year.
