Trump to meet senators on ethics provisions in Digital Asset Clarity Act
Negotiations over the bill’s ethics section, which would bar senior officials from crypto business interests, are set against a tight Senate calendar before the August recess.
Bitcoin Magazine reports that President Donald Trump plans to meet with a group of senators at the White House on Thursday afternoon to address the final major obstacle to the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, after talks over the bill’s ethics provisions threatened its ability to pass before the August recess.
The sticking point is an ethics section that would restrict senior government officials from holding personal business interests in the crypto sector, a condition Democrats have tied to support in large part over Trump’s own ties to the industry.
According to the report, negotiators have not reached a compromise, and the Senate calendar offers a narrow window. The bill cleared the Senate Banking Committee in a 15-9 vote, but Democrats Ruben Gallego and Angela Alsobrooks said they would not back final passage without an ethics provision, after an amendment to bar the president, vice president, and members of Congress from crypto business ties failed 11-13 during committee markup.
The article also notes that Trump has pressed for Senate passage but has not said which conflict-of-interest terms he would sign, and that his disclosure of making more than $1 billion from crypto involvement in 2025 has drawn criticism. A group of Democratic senators held a press conference Tuesday calling for opposition to the bill if it does not sever what they call Trump’s corrupt ties to the sector.
