New Zealand signals interest in joining Australia-Fiji defense pact

The Ocean of Peace Alliance, signed July 6, commits Australia and Fiji to mutual defense if either is attacked, and New Zealand is weighing participation to deepen regional security ties.

New Zealand has shown interest in joining a newly signed defense pact between Australia and Fiji, a development that could broaden hard security cooperation across the South Pacific, according to SCMP Economy.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance was signed on July 6 and would require Australia and Fiji to come to each other’s defense if either is attacked.

SCMP Economy reports that New Zealand’s broader alignment could raise concerns for smaller states, as analysts warn their priorities may not be addressed within a wider alliance.

SCMP Economy also notes that the relationship with Fiji has been described as strong and enduring, with the partnership framed around years of joint work toward “a safer region for all.”
