OpenAI chief signals pricing cuts as AI model rivals intensify

Altman said OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol is already about half the price of Anthropic’s Claude, and it could be delivered at one-quarter of that price if needed.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s founder and CEO, signaled that the company is prepared to cut prices further on its latest AI models as competition with US rival Anthropic and cheaper Chinese alternatives increases, according to SCMP Economy.

Altman said OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.6 Sol is already “half the price” of Anthropic’s Claude 5, and he added that OpenAI would be “happy to deliver at one-quarter of the price.”

SCMP Economy noted the remarks come as Anthropic has gained traction with global enterprise customers and has seen momentum from Claude Code as an AI coding tool.

The outlet also pointed to pricing pressure from China, where domestic developers have spent much of the year lowering the cost of frontier models, while OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 lineup remains more expensive than major Chinese rivals despite earlier price cuts for the series.
