Senate Judiciary grills AG nominee over crypto enforcement unit shutdown
The nominee, Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche, is also facing questions tied to President Trump’s pardon of former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.
Cointelegraph reports that members of the Senate Judiciary Committee raised concerns about President Donald Trump’s US attorney general nominee, Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche, focusing on how the Justice Department has handled crypto enforcement.
At the hearing, the outlet says Blanche faced allegations that an order he issued dismantled the DOJ’s crypto enforcement unit in April 2025.
Cointelegraph also reports that Illinois Senator Dick Durbin accused Blanche’s actions of enabling Trump to benefit from ties to the crypto industry, pointing to Trump’s family business World Liberty Financial and alleging Zhao helped channel funds into the venture.
The outlet adds that the panel is considering Blanche’s nomination for confirmation, with Republicans holding a 52-47 margin to advance given Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, and that Blanche faced crypto-related questions about the presidential pardon for Zhao, who pleaded guilty in 2023 to a felony tied to Binance’s AML regime.
