3iQ will manage part of Bhutan’s pledged Bitcoin for Gelephu

Bhutan said the Gelephu Mindfulness City project will be funded with up to 10,000 Bitcoins as it aims to diversify beyond hydropower and tourism.

Bitcoin Magazine reports that Canadian digital asset manager 3iQ Corp. will manage some of the Bitcoin reserves pledged for Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City project.

According to the report, Bhutan pledged up to 10,000 Bitcoins to help fund the special administrative region, and 3iQ will also invest in local talent and establish a long-term physical presence in Gelephu as the area develops into a digital financial hub.

The plan, first announced in 2023, is intended to position the GMC as a new economic hub in southern Bhutan focused on mindfulness, sustainability, and innovation, with the broader goal of diversifying the country’s economy beyond hydropower and tourism.

The report adds that Bhutan began mining Bitcoin in 2019, later announced it held Bitcoin reserves in 2024, and in January 2025 said it would hold other cryptocurrencies on its balance sheet.
