Ukraine airstrikes create offshore bottleneck for nearly 135M barrels of Russian oil
The attacks have knocked out about one-third of Russia’s domestic refining capacity to roughly 3.91 million barrels per day, forcing more crude onto export routes even as sanctioned buyers face delays.
Ukraine’s campaign of airstrikes targeting Russian refineries has left nearly 135 million barrels of Russian crude stranded offshore, creating a growing traffic jam in export logistics, OilPrice reports.
The article says the drone strikes, including hits on facilities operated by Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat and Afipsky, have knocked out about one-third of Russia’s domestic refining capacity, bringing throughput to roughly 3.91 million barrels per day, the lowest level since 2005.
With refining constrained, Moscow is being pushed to divert more barrels to international markets, even though the country pumped 8.93 million barrels per day in June, about 830,000 barrels per day below its OPEC+ quota, according to OilPrice.
The outlet adds that major export hubs are experiencing gridlock as buyers increasingly refuse sanctioned cargo due to secondary penalties, contributing to week-long delays for some blends and additional accumulation near key terminals and shipping chokepoints.
