Central Asia and Azerbaijan outline plans to deepen trans-Caspian links
A July 31 summit in Kyrgyzstan also formalized Azerbaijan’s upgrade from C5 to full C6 participation, alongside bilateral transport, energy, and trade agreements.
OilPrice reports that leaders of five Central Asian states plus Azerbaijan met on July 31 in Kyrgyzstan, on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, signaling an intent to deepen trans-Caspian connections.
The meeting’s final document, the Cholpon-Ata Declaration, emphasized expanding trade and maintaining regional security, and described the participants’ commitment to peace, good-neighborliness, and sustainable development.
According to OilPrice, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said Kyrgyzstan would use its tenure as a UN Security Council member to promote the common interests of the C6 states, while Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said relations with Central Asia rank among Baku’s top foreign policy priorities.
The summit also formalized Azerbaijan’s full participation in Central Asian councils, expanding the format from C5 to C6, and included bilateral agreements covering transport, energy, and trade between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, and an allied relations treaty between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
