US lawmakers seek fewer tax breaks to cut reliance on Chinese tech
The effort is tied to national security concerns, amid warnings from Beijing about alleged security risks linked to US AI tools in China.
The South China Morning Post reports that a growing number of US lawmakers want to use changes to the tax code to reduce corporate reliance on Chinese technology, framing economic ties as a national security risk.
The outlet also notes that US AI company Anthropic responded after Beijing warned of security “backdoor” risks, saying users in China were advised to uninstall its flagship Claude Code product but were not supposed to be using it in the first place.
SCMP further links the broader US-China backdrop to the political landscape in Washington, saying the death of Senator Lindsey Graham removed a key advocate of a hardline approach toward Beijing as Republicans debate how aggressively to confront China and project military power overseas.
