Bachelet and Duque panel urges Latin America to avoid bloc alignment

The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean report says the region should keep security ties with the United States while diversifying trade and investment toward China and other economies.

Latin American countries should resist pressure to pick sides in the US-China rivalry and instead use their strategic resources, a high-level commission co-chaired by former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and former Colombian president Ivan Duque said.

The commission, released Tuesday by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, argues the region can keep security relationships with Washington while diversifying trade and investment toward China and other economies, rather than locking into fixed alignments between rival powers.

Duque said Latin America needs “a geopolitical vision of our own,” warning countries not to automatically take sides and to preserve flexibility to align with different partners based on strategic priorities and opportunities for trade and investment.

The report also acknowledges Latin America’s room for maneuver is constrained in security, technology, and critical infrastructure, where the United States remains dominant and has sought to curb Beijing’s expanding influence, according to SCMP Economy.
