Chinese vice-minister Ma Zhaoxu to visit US next week
The trip is expected to support preparations for President Xi Jinping’s later-year Washington visit and may include a stop in Miami for the G20 summit.
Chinese foreign vice-minister Ma Zhaoxu is expected to travel to the United States next week, a move that the South China Morning Post says could help lay groundwork for President Xi Jinping’s planned Washington visit later this year.
The outlet reports that sources familiar with the plan said Ma, who has been involved in managing US-China relations, would be in Washington next week, and that a stop in Miami is also likely, ahead of the city hosting the G20 summit in December.
Analysts cited by SCMP described the visit as a so-called temperature check on US-China relations, with the potential to steady ties before a hoped-for positive outcome around the expected September summit between Xi and US President Donald Trump.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly, framed the engagement as part of cautious efforts to improve the relationship ahead of the September talks.
