Green leader says reported Mahmood chancellor pick would be ‘subservient to the City’
Zack Polanski made the claim after reports circulated that Shabana Mahmood could become Andy Burnham’s chancellor.
Green party leader Zack Polanski said reports that Shabana Mahmood is set to become Andy Burnham’s chancellor would signal a government that is “subservient to the City,” according to statements posted by Polanski on social media. Polanski argued the appointment implies the administration would not challenge the City of London’s influence or tax the wealth of bankers.
Polanski said the political “mood music” around the potential cabinet was “ominous,” while adding that the cabinet lineup is not yet confirmed. The post also referenced a Financial Times front page splash image, underscoring Polanski’s view that markets and finance institutions would retain strong sway.
Separately in the broader live updates, the Guardian noted comments from Peter Kyle on Argentina supporters, saying an Argentina banner celebrating the Falkland Islands issue was “entirely inappropriate” after the team beat England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final in Atlanta, according to the Press Association.
