Russia attack damages Kernel’s sunflower oil terminal in Odesa

Kernel said the strike damaged about half its Odesa terminal storage capacity and also harmed equipment linked to oil transshipment.

Ukrainian agribusiness Kernel Holding said a Russian attack on the morning of July 14 damaged its sunflower oil transshipment terminal in the Odesa region. The strike sparked a large-scale fire that hit about half of the terminal’s sunflower oil storage capacity and key transshipment infrastructure, Kernel said. Kernel estimated that roughly 25,000 tonnes of sunflower oil owned by Kernel and a U.S. company stored at the terminal were damaged. The company said coordinated response by its port operations team, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, and nearby terminal operators contained and extinguished the blaze within 12 hours, with no reported employee injuries. Kernel said its prompt response helped prevent the fire from spreading to other facilities and avoided leakage of sunflower oil into the sea. The company is now carrying out cleanup and assessing the full extent of damage and losses. Kernel added that missile and drone attacks over the past weekend led it to suspend operations at the port of Chornomorsk, where grain loading and unloading equipment, terminal infrastructure, and power supply lines were damaged. It also said grain silos and sunflower oil storage tanks were destroyed or severely damaged, leading to the loss of 45,00 tonnes of wheat and 9,000 tonnes of sunflower oil. Reuters reported that Ukraine’s grain export capacity via the Black Sea has dropped by about one-third, and that shipments have fallen to around 4 million tonnes per month, citing the nation’s main farmers’ union.
