US ends visa loophole for foreign students, media and exchange programs
The DHS said it is eliminating a “duration of status” path that let some F, J and I visa holders stay indefinitely without routine oversight.
The White House moved to tighten U.S. visa rules for foreign students, media personnel and people on exchange programs, citing changes that target visa categories that previously could be renewed without explicit expiration oversight, according to SCMP Economy.
In a Thursday statement, the Department of Homeland Security said it is eliminating what it called a “duration of status loophole,” which allowed these visa classes to remain in the United States indefinitely without routine government oversight.
SCMP Economy reports the earlier approach, introduced decades ago, let F, J and I visa holders be admitted for the duration of the approved program or assignment rather than a shorter fixed period, leaving entry records without a clear end date.
