US to impose 25% tariffs on some Brazilian goods after trade probe

The duties will exempt imports of coffee, beef, and some ethanol products, while ethanol overall remains subject to the tariff, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

The United States will begin charging 25.0% tariffs on imports of certain goods from Brazil after an investigation into alleged unfair trade practices, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reported that the year long inquiry concluded that multiple Brazilian practices were unreasonable and discriminatory, aimed at restricting the competitive position of American farmers, workers, innovators, and exporters.

Imports of coffee, beef, and certain ethanol products would be exempt from the new duties, while ethanol would still be subject to the tariffs, according to a senior administration official cited ahead of the official announcement.

Brazil denounced the tariffs and said it would take steps to insulate its economy from their impact, while the U.S. said the action is meant to address the identified unfair practices and noted it remains open to continuing negotiations with Brazil.
